Grace Callaghan is a third year BMus flute student at the RNCM. She writes ‘My tutors tell me that to progress further it’s vital that I have a flute of a professional standard, but I don’t have the means to buy a better one with my student debt now rising to £69,000.’
Principal flute in the RNCM Wind Orchestra, Grace also plays in their Symphony and Chamber orchestras. Her professor, Laura Jellicoe, writes: ‘Grace is a lovely musician, very suited to an orchestral career. But her very basic instrument puts her at a disadvantage, and her family is not in the position to help.’
Grace is currently on placement, coaching at the Junior RNCM, and in a range of community music-making, including school assemblies for Bradford Music Service.
Can we help her? A professional Altus flute of the kind Grace needs costs £9,730. One of our supporters has already chipped in £1,000.
We’re going to make Grace’s flute the focus of Cherubim Youth Music Festival ’18 – and hope for a miracle.
