Crossing Points: Cherubim Youth Music Festival: Saturday

Behind the Façade

SATURDAY, 19:30 15 SEPTEMBER

A beautifully balanced concert, opening with four sparkling and varied concertos for soloists and strings – two familiar works from the baroque, and two brilliant 2othC concertos that show off the performers’ virtuosity: the characteristically tuneful Arnold, and the sultry blues-tinged vibraphone concerto by the great modern star of percussion writing, Emanuel Séjourné. A beautifully balanced concert, opening with four sparkling and varied concertos for soloists and strings – two familiar works from the baroque, and two brilliant 20thC concertos that show off the performers’ virtuosity: the characteristically tuneful Arnold, and the sultry blues-tinged vibraphone concerto by the great modern star of percussion writing, Emanuel Séjourné.

Façade was an ‘entertainment’ devised in 1922 by Sacheverell Sitwell featuring his sister Edith’s poetry and the music of his young protégé William Walton, whose career it launched. The work was an immediate success and has enchanted audiences everywhere ever since. We present it here with local celebrity TV actress Pippa Haywood and Martin Vander Weyer, financial columnist of The Spectator, as the narrators.
