Gabrieli weekend: a great success

The Gabrieli event held in St John’s Church, Tisbury over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of April was a resounding success!

With the Cherubim Singers coming from far and wide to participate, joined by Michael Maxwell Steer on the Organ, Sam Wiggs on bassoon, and Resonate Brass (from the brass section of Exeter Symphony Orchestra) providing the extra depth – all glued together by Greg Skidmore at the helm, it was a fun weekend with everyone leaving in a positive mood after the concert on Sunday afternoon. Rehearsing a selected few pieces from the Gabrieli repertoire, the concert featured Resonate Brass and Maxwell performing the Canzon Duodecimi Toni and the Sonata Pian e Forte, and the choristers and organ in In Ecclesiis and Omnes Gentes. Other pieces looked at were the Jubilate à8, Jubilate à11, Kyrie – Christe – Kyrie, Magnificat, O Magnum Mysterium, and Sanctus, but not all made the final cut for the concert.

Maxwell admirably performed the following pieces for solo organ: Fantasia del sei tono, Ricercar del decimo tono per tutti i tipi di strumenti a tastiera (1595), and Toccata del secondo tono ‘per organo o altri instrumenti a tastiera’ (1593). We have received much positive feedback from those who attended, and indeed from the people of Tisbury who filled the church for the final concert. Suggestions gratefully received for a future event!
