We are thrilled to announce a new collaborative venture: a commission for flute, piano & sound enhancement composed by James B Wilson with additional ambience by Finn Murphy. Siren Song is a commission by the Cherubim Music Trust for Lily Owens, awardee of the Savile Club-David Ganderton silver Levit flute - premiering in January 2025.
The composer, James B Wilson, writes: “the concept of Siren Song was inspired by a World Health Organisation report in 2023, warning of an ‘epidemic of loneliness and isolation’. This in turn led me to think how our minds build pictures about our world through random sounds: even ephemeral contact in a street or hearing someone in a next door apartment can trigger a story in our heads. The central figure of this work, the flute, reflects this isolation but also its imaginative possibilities - fertile ground from which wordless theatre can spring.
“I look forward tremendously to collaborating for the first time with the experienced young sound designer Finn Murphy to give my compositional ideas a multi-dimensional richness.”
James B Wilson holds the Holmes Composition Fellowship from the Cherubim Music Trust, and is pictured here with Lily, a flute scholar at Wells Cathedral School and the youngest ever principal of the National Youth Orchestra.
