Jamaal Kashim is a harpist and composer, currently reading Music at St John’s College, University of Cambridge. He previously studied at the Royal College of Music Junior Department with the late Professor Daphne Boden and Jonathan Pitkin and continues his harp studies with Professor Maria Graf. He has participated in masterclasses with Isabelle Moretti, Marisa Robles, Stephen Fitzpatrick, and Joel von Lerber.
As a harpist, Jamaal was a semi-finalist in BBC Young Musician 2024. At the RCMJD, he is a four-time winner of the Gordon Turner Harp Competition and won the Peter Morrison Concerto Competition in 2024. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Windsor & Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Chorleywood Orchestra, the London International Concert Orchestra, and the RCMJD Symphony Orchestra, and has given solo recitals at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room and at Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge, as part of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival. He was featured on ABRSM Stage – the organisation’s online performance series – and has appeared alongside the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective at Holywell Music Room and Wigmore Hall.
Jamaal served as Principal Harp of the National Children’s Orchestra GB, Chineke! Junior Orchestra, RCMJD Symphony Orchestra, and London Schools Symphony Orchestra, with whom he was a Scholar of the Countess of Munster Trust. He was Joint Principal Harp of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s youth programme ‘Young’ in 2023 and was mentored by Rachel Masters as an LPO Junior Artist 2023/2024.
