We are delighted to welcome a remarkable new addition to the Cherubim collection — the Jordan cello, generously lent to the Trust by Anne Jordan.
This early 19th-century English cello carries a rich and deeply personal history. It was played professionally in London during the 1950s and 60s, before later falling into disrepair. In the early 1980s, the instrument was carefully restored by a young luthier at the beginning of his career, bringing it back to life after a period in which it had become unplayable.

The cello went on to accompany years of music-making, from student life through to professional and personal musical experiences. In time, however, it was set aside, and has since remained largely unplayed.
Now, it is ready to begin a new chapter.
The instrument will shortly be taken to Philip Brown for a full appraisal, and we look forward to learning more about its origins and possible attribution. Given its quality and character, it is hoped that the cello will be placed with an undergraduate musician, supporting them at a pivotal stage in their development.
We are immensely grateful to Anne Jordan for her generosity in ensuring that this cello will once again be heard, played, and loved.
