Hugo Svensson is currently pursuing instrumental and academic studies at the Royal College of Music in London. He is an RCM Scholar studying with Professor Yuri Zhislin. In addition to his viola studies, Hugo started conducting studies at the Royal College of Music in September 2024.
Born in Lund, Sweden, Hugo moved to Stockholm to study viola playing with Nina and Oleg Balabine at the upper secondary education of the specialist music school Lilla Akademien. Hugo spent the third year of his upper secondary education at Lars-Erik Larsson gymnasiet in Lund and graduated with a diploma in Social Science and Music. Upon graduation, Hugo studied Philosophy at Lund University for half a year, while also completing an upper secondary diploma in the Natural Sciences and a course in Baroque Music at the Malmö Academy of Music. Further reflection on education, knowledge and other existential questions however, led to further music studies at Lilla Akademiens Pre-College education.
Throughout his activities as a violist, Hugo has had the opportunity to interact with numerous eminent educators and performers including, Priya Mitchell, Hugo Ticciati, Ian Bostridge, Tonu Kaljuste, Antonello Farulli, Simon Rowland-Jones and Nathan Braude among others.
Past performance highlights include concerts with the New Generation Symphony Orchestra and O/modernt Chamber Orchestra New Generation Symphony Orchestra both directed by Hugo Ticciati in Berliner Konzerthaus and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Other notable performance high points include solo performance in Grünewaldsalen, Stockholm Concert Hall and chamber music performance at Berwaldhallen Stockholm. In the near future, Hugo is very much looking forward to developing and refining the lens through which he regards the world through his academic and instrumental studies at the Royal College of Music.
