Martha Jones, first recipient of Cherubim’s recently acquired and beautifully restored Jean Baptiste Colin (Mirecourt) ‘Brian’ cello, is a fifteen year old cellist who wishes to grow, collaborate, and perform in both orchestral and solo settings. Hoping to study music at a degree level and beyond either at a conservatoire or through music performance degree Martha has already achieved a distinction in her Grade 8 cello at the age of 11 alongside a string of wins at the Derby Arts Festival in 2024 where she picked up First place in ‘The Most Promising Instrumentalist’, ‘Best Solo String Performance’ and ‘Grade 8+ String solo’ competitions.
“I will continue to develop my musical skills, both academically and practically and strive to be the best musician I can be. I wish to teach cello as well as pursuing a career in performance, as I feel it is vital to inspire the next generation of young musicians. Throughout my musical journey, I have seen the difference that a high-quality instrument can make to someone’s playing, but I am unfortunately not in a position to be able to purchase such an instrument. Therefore, access to the loan of a cello would significantly contribute to my growth as a cellist and all-round musicianship and enable me to further develop my skills as a performer.”
Martha also plays piano and last year achieved a distinction in her LAMDA acting Grade 8 examination. She plays in the CBSO Youth orchestra and up until last year was a member of the Trent Chamber Orchestra. We all look forward to seeing how her playing develops with this instrument.
